A look at our best-in-class development programs

We believe that as our people grow, develop and take on new experiences, Zurn Elkay Water Solutions grows, too. Our focus on professional development extends naturally from our core value of continuous improvement.

That’s why we make it possible for every associate to power their own development and career. By offering self-directed learning and on-the-job experiences that complement it, we help associates and teams grow. Here are a few of our key programs.

Manager development 

Our manager development program, which is offered globally each year, has three levels: 

  • Build: Participants learn skills such as leading through conflict, emotional intelligence and understanding working styles, and setting and managing priorities.

  • Grow: Participants learn skills such as influencing others, critical thinking, behavioral interviewing and change leadership.

  • Accelerate: Participants learn skills such as leading innovation, having crucial conversations, leading across cultures and leading virtually.


Each level is a three-month time commitment and requires about four hours a week. While the learning is self-directed, groups of associates participate in the program together to support shared learning experiences among a cohort of colleagues. 

Learning on the job, together

We follow a learn-reflect-do-share methodology. Associates learn a new skill, consider what they’ve learned, complete a homework assignment that is designed to occur within their everyday work, and then have a touchpoint meeting with other program participants to share insights they’ve gained and learn from each other. 

Having touchpoints with other participants is another unique feature of our manager development training. We recognize how it helps associates more deeply understand learnings as they explain them to others and share key takeaways for the future.

Leadership development

Along with manager development, Zurn Elkay offers virtual classroom leadership development opportunities, including courses on Crucial Accountability, Crucial Conversations and 5 Dysfunctions of a Team. In 2021, 21 associates participated in these opportunities.

McKinsey Black Executive Leadership Program

We recognize that external programs can offer a valuable opportunity, particularly for diverse professionals. As we work to support equitable development of the talent pipeline, we believe in investing in career growth. 

In 2021, Tamanjong Fusi, Director of our Janitorial and Sanitation & Alternatives Business, participated in the McKinsey Black Executive Leadership Program, exploring dynamic leadership techniques, examples of Black professional excellence, and creating a personal energy management plan. We were honored to sponsor his participation.

Zurn U

Our internal e-learning platform empowers associates to drive their own development in areas including technology, management skills, product knowledge and the Zurn Elkay Business System. 

The content is presented in a variety of formats including traditional e-learning, virtual classrooms, traditional classroom offerings, audio books, short videos, books and book summaries. More than 460 associates accessed Zurn U in 2021, completing 420 different course offerings.

Tuition reimbursement

For those who want to advance their academic credentials, Zurn Elkay offers a tuition reimbursement program. It’s available for associates pursuing an associate, undergraduate or graduate degree. Zurn provided more than $55,000 in tuition reimbursement in 2021.

Internships

Our internship program provides early exposure to our business and challenges interns with meaningful projects and on-the-job learning. It also engages them in community activities where they see firsthand the positive impact businesses can have and the value of giving back. 

We partner with multiple schools including Marquette University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Penn State University, Virginia Tech and North Carolina State. About half of our interns typically come from partner schools. 

Our program has continued despite the complications stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, with 37 interns participating in 2021.
